England established thirteen colonies along the Atlantic coast with a variety of lifestyles. Geographic differences led to the emergence of three distinct regions: New England, the Middle Atlantic, and the Southern colonies. Differences were based on the physical characteristics of
their environment, religious beliefs, the origins of the colonists, the presence of slaves, and different ways of earning a living.
